Philip C. Chronakis

Member New York, NY

Philip C. Chronakis, a Member with CSG’s Litigation Group, handles a wide array of commercial litigation in New York and New Jersey’s federal and state courts at the trial and appellate levels. He represents corporate and individual clients in complex commercial litigation, arbitration, mediation, appeals, and negotiations.

His approach to litigation focuses equally on negotiating and resolving disputes, wherever possible, to avoid or minimize his clients’ exposure to protracted court proceedings, coupled with an aggressive, sustained and creative representation of his clients when litigation is a necessity.

A seasoned advisor to healthcare entities, Phil has represented hospitals, surgery centers, practices, and physicians in corporate, employment, and reimbursement disputes; licensure defenses before the BME and OPMC; and on issues of fraud and abuse, coding compliance, ERISA preemption, end of life care, IVF procedures, and surrogacy agreements. Phil was lead trial counsel in the seminal Betancourt vs. Trinitas Hospital action in 2009, regarding physicians’ authority to terminate life sustaining measures.

Additionally, Phil has extensive experience in trust and estate litigation and administration, corporate disputes, matrimonial actions, employment discrimination actions, and legal malpractice claims – where he has served as a testifying trial expert. Drawing on his experience as a former Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor, Phil defends clients in white collar criminal prosecutions, and has prosecuted and defended civil RICO actions.

Outside of private practice, Phil was an Adjunct Professor at Seton Hall University School of Law from 2001 to 2004, teaching brief writing and oral argument; and was a guest lecturer at New York Law School in 2015 on IVF and surrogacy law.

Phil has been published in the National Law Journal on the Electoral College, the New Jersey Law Journal on the State’s drug sentencing laws, and other legal publications. The New York Post devoted extensive coverage to his winning 2017 New York Supreme Court trial verdict in an art fraud action, and his 2018 defense of a woman’s right to reproductive autonomy over her cryopreserved embryos. Phil worked on Cory Booker’s 2002 Newark mayoral campaign.
